Dreams are one of the most misunderstood languages of God. While culture offers varying interpretations to include psychology and superstition, many believers are still left wondering what their dreams mean.
In this article, I answer six common questions people have about the meaning of dreams.
What I share may challenge popular beliefs, but it’s based in biblical truth and shaped by my intimate encounters with God. This isn’t just theory, it’s revelation that God has taught me through years of seeking Him, learning His Word, and walking closely with Him.
My goal is to help you recognize that your dreams are not random. They are often divine messages intended to guide, heal, and align you with your God-given purpose.
Let’s return to Eden, where communication with God is intimate, and let’s learn how to hear Him clearly, even while we sleep.
Question #1: Why do we dream?
Dreams are divine downloads. They carry warning, purpose, and revelation for revealing what’s hidden in the spirit before it manifests in the natural.
My Warning Dream: The Truck in the Forest
Not long ago, I began to feel uneasy about a close friend; let’s call her Laura. I questioned some of her intentions, then came the dream…
The Dream
We were in a truck. My daughter was new to learning how to drive. Laura was in the passenger seat, and I sat in the back.
The scene turned into a dark forest with no clear path. It was crowded with boulders, trees, tree stumps, etc..
Laura was encouraging my daughter to drive recklessly, and eventually the truck flipped a few times and landed upside down.
The dream scene cut to the arrival of an ambulance to our rescue. My daughter and I were trapped inside, but ironically, Laura was safe outside the vehicle, untouched.
The Interpretation
I woke up feeling distraught and betrayed. But as I sought God, I learned that the dream was a warning, not just about the person, but about a spiritual plot against my family.
- My daughter represented purpose and legacy.
- The reckless driving symbolized a spiritual attack aimed at derailing our path.
Laura’s presence was symbolic, serving as a familiar vessel used unknowingly because she wasn’t spiritually grounded. - The ambulance represented divine rescue, but only after damage had occurred.
This wasn’t about fighting Laura, this was about spiritual warfare!
How Did I Know It Was God?
To start, I was fasting and posturing myself spiritually to receive.
Additionally, God had previously showed me to pay special attention to my dreams.
What God Taught Me
“We wrestle not against flesh and blood…”
— Ephesians 6:12
This was not just a warning, it was revelation of a demonic assignment.
God showed me that the enemy seeks access through those close to us who are spiritually vulnerable.
Like a virus, darkness looks for a host and sometimes that host is someone we love.
But rather than blame Laura, God led me to pray and war in the Spirit for my daughter.
That war eventually led to my daughter’s breakthrough and victory.
Final Word
This is why we acknowledge every dream. Because God is speaking. Not to spook us, but to prepare and empower us. Dreams aren't irrelevant. They’re strategic downloads for our protection, promotion, and purpose. God speaks. Will you listen?
Question #2: What does it mean when you dream about things like teeth falling out, being chased, snakes, or flying?
This is a common question that I’ve wondered about myself. I’ve had dreams where I was being chased by a snake, falling, and even losing teeth. You can find all kinds of interpretations online, but here’s the truth most sources leave out:
Dreams originate with God.
He is the Creator of everything, including dreams. The enemy didn’t create the spiritual realm; he only distorts what already exists. That’s why it’s crazy to trust in random internet meanings. These often create misconceptions and pull people away from the truth.
Let’s be clear:
God is the Source!
The enemy is a hijacker!
You might have a dream that seems scary or confusing, but that’s often because your soul (mind, emotions, and will) is in misalignment with God. It could be due to things such as fear, trauma, addiction, doubt, mental unrest, etc.. These types of dreams are not definitive symbols but they are signals. They’re like your spirit’s version of a sore throat, which is a warning that something deeper needs attention.
Think of it this way:
A sore throat warns of an infection in your body.
A check engine light warns that your car needs maintenance.
Likewise, a dream of falling or being chased is often your spirit’s way of saying: “Something needs alignment.”
Biblical Reference – Numbers 13:33 (KJV)
“And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak… and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
The Israelites had already been delivered from Egypt physically, but their minds were still enslaved. They saw themselves as small, even though God had promised them victory. Their fear distorted the truth, further delaying their destiny. Similarly, unsettling dreams can point to fear or inner bondage that keeps you from moving forward.
So what do you do?
Pretty please, do not rush to Google. Instead:
Take it to God in prayer.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what’s going on inside you.
Get in the Word to renew your mind.
Use dreams like this as spiritual maintenance alerts; not messages to fear but signals to seek alignment.
Final Word
If a dream doesn’t line up with God’s nature or biblical truth, it’s static, interference in your spiritual signal. The enemy can’t originate truth, only mimic and distort. But you can always re-tune your frequency by reconnecting with the Source.
Question #3: Can dreams really tell the future or give warnings?
Absolutely, yes.
Dreams can absolutely reveal future events or give divine warnings, and we see this all throughout the Bible.
Dreams are one of the ways God communicates direction, correction, or preparation. He uses them to reveal what’s coming, which should not scare us, but equip us.
Here are a few powerful biblical examples:
Joseph (Genesis 37)
Joseph had dreams of sheaves and stars bowing before him. At the time, it seemed like symbolic imagery, but those dreams actually foreshadowed his rise to power in Egypt, where even his own family would come to him in need. Although his dream didn’t come to pass immediately, it was prophetic, laying out the blueprint for his destiny.
Joseph (Jesus’ earthly father – Matthew 1–2)
God spoke to Joseph in multiple dreams:
Assuring him that Mary’s pregnancy was from God (Matthew 1:20–21)
Warning him to flee to Egypt and protect Jesus from Herod (Matthew 2:13)
Telling him when it was safe to return (Matthew 2:19–22)
In Joseph’s case, each dream was relevant to real-time giving strategy and protection.
The Wise Men (Matthew 2:12)
After visiting baby Jesus, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, who had evil intentions. That dream helped preserve Jesus’ life against Herod’s evil plan.
So what does this mean for you?
If you’re having dreams that feel like warnings, pay attention. If you’re seeing repeated symbols, patterns, or events that feel ahead of your current reality, don’t ignore them. Acknowledge them by writing them down. Pray over them to seek knowledge and understanding. Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity on the proper actions to create.
God isn’t trying to scare you, He’s preparing you.
Dreams can be a divine roadmap, pointing to your purpose, alerting you of enemy traps, or showing glimpses of future assignments. This is part of the supernatural relationship God invites us into where we partner with Him, and He shares heavenly insight with us.
Final Word
Not all warning dreams are literal. Sometimes, the message is symbolic and requires interpretation. But the key is knowing who the Sender is. If God sent it, there’s purpose behind it and your job is to respond with wisdom, not fear.
Check out my Dream Protocol for the steps you must take with every dream from God: Acknowledge, Know, Understand, Create.
Question #4: Are all dreams from God?
Yes, but here’s what you should understand.
God is the Author of truth, the Revealer of mysteries, and the Designer of destiny. Dreams are one of the ways God speaks to us to deliver spiritual messages when our minds are still and our hearts are open. So what about those dreams that feel dark?
For clarity:
The enemy cannot originate dreams!
He is not a creator, he’s a counterfeiter!
The enemy’s only strategy is to distort what God has already spoken just like he did in the Garden of Eden. He manipulated the truth by twisting the instructions that God gave to Adam and Eve. In this way, he altered the blessing into bait for disobedience.
And Jesus exposed the enemy’s playbook:
“The thief comes only to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…”
— John 10:10 (KJV)
In direct contrast:
“God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…”
— 1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)
So if a dream leaves you full of confusion or fear then that’s not the fruit of the Holy Spirit. God’s dreams provide clarity, boldness, and direction.
Let’s break it down scientifically.
As a scientist, I see the pattern clearly. Dreams are like DNA. They are coded messages where every component matters. If one part of the code is changed, the whole message can change, ultimately resulting in a disease-causing error called a gene mutation.
The enemy doesn’t write dreams, he mutates them. He tries to insert fear, distraction, and misdirection into what God meant for good.
But here’s what the Bible says about fear:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
So let’s stand firm:
Dreams from God spark faith and wisdom.
Distorted dreams manipulated by the enemy provoke fear and confusion.
That’s why discernment is key. Not every emotional dream is automatically a warning from God. Sometimes it’s static as a result of your spiritual tuner being faulty due to stress, sin, trauma, or spiritual weakness.
Bottom line
Yes, all dreams originate from God. But if your soul is open to the wrong frequency, the message can be hijacked. When you’re tuned in to the Holy Spirit and grounded in the Word, you can acknowledge what’s real and dismiss what’s distorted.
Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity.
Compare it with Scripture.
And don’t let fear define the message; let faith interpret it.
And here’s my truth:
Since walking closely with God and keeping my spirit aligned, I rarely experience altered or hijacked dreams. But back when I was distant from Him (spiritually distracted) that’s when the enemy found openings. That’s when distortions crept in.
Final Word
Your level of spiritual alignment matters. When you're walking with God, your dreams stay protected and pure just like your purpose.
Question #5: Why do some dreams feel so real?
Because they’re meant to get your attention.
God designed humans with senses and emotions to intimately relate to us in a way that no spirit or angelic being can experience. The realness of dreams is an intentional design; thus, it’s one of my favorite parts about being human.
In Genesis, God gave humans dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26–28). And with that came the unique ability not just to observe, but to experience reality through sight, touch, taste, sound, and feeling. Spirits, including the enemy, do not possess this earthly ability. This level of intimacy in communication is exclusive between God and us.
So when a dream feels real, and you can remember the smell of something or the emotion that comes with feeling fear, awe, excitement, or nervousness, know that it’s not random, it’s purposeful.
It’s God engaging your senses so you don’t just visualize (by seeing) a message, but you experience it (with multiple senses).
Biblical Examples of Experiencing God
Daniel had visions so intense he was left weak and speechless:
“I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left… and I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground.”
— Daniel 10:7–9
John the Revelator said:
“I was in the Spirit… and I fell at His feet as though dead.”
— Revelation 1:10,17
Isaiah, when he saw the Lord seated on the throne, cried out:
“Woe is me! For I am undone… for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
— Isaiah 6:5
God’s presence in visions often overwhelmed the flesh. This shows how real His communication is when it reaches us, even in dreams.
Outside of dreams, physical encounters with God had intense effects:
Enoch walked so closely with God that he didn’t die; God took him. (Genesis 5:24)
Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind. (2 Kings 2:11)
God told Moses: “No man can see Me and live.” (Exodus 33:20)
Final Word
When God gives a dream that feels real, it’s part of the “Acknowledge” step of your dream protocol. It’s His way of saying, “This is important. I want you to honor it in order to know, understand, and create from it.” That intensity is meant to spark a reverent fear of God to accomplish an expected end result. He’s inviting you into sacred communication and the weight of that moment is holy. So next time a dream feels vivid, emotional, or hyper-real, don’t ignore it. It’s not just a dream, it’s an intimate experience.
Question #6: Can you control or influence your dreams?
In short, No, you can’t control what God shows you; however, you can influence your posture to receive it.
God is the Dream-Giver!
The Bible tells us He reveals deep, hidden things through dreams, especially in the night when we’re still.
“In a dream, in a vision of the night… then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction.”
(Job 33:14–16)
God speaks in dreams to direct, warn, and confirm His will. We don’t author the dream, God does.
The Soul Can Influence Dream Content But That’s Not the Same as Control
The Bible instructs us to continually renew our minds to eliminate the cares of the world. Residual junk lingering in our minds can result in purposeless dream content:
“A dream cometh through the multitude of business…”
(Ecclesiastes 5:3)
This means emotional stress, anxiety, fear, or worrying can create cluttered dream content. That’s not the same as spiritual revelation. It’s soul chatter, and can distort what God intends to say, like static interrupting a radio signal.
You Can’t Control the Message, But You Can Prepare the Environment
You can’t decide the dream but you can choose how spiritually in tune you are to receive it. Think of it like tuning a radio to the right frequency.
“He revealeth the deep and secret things: He knoweth what is in the darkness…” (Daniel 2:22)
Just like Daniel prepared to receive mysteries from God, we can do the same through fasting, prayer, purity, and seeking God’s presence. Your spiritual discipline creates room for divine dreams to land clearly.
You’re Responsible for the Response, Not the Revelation
“The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.”
(1 Corinthians 14:32)
This verse reminds us that even though God gives dreams, we’re accountable for what we do with them. That includes whether we ignore, dismiss, or act on them. We’re stewards of revelation, not the source. So let’s use our dreams to Acknowledge, Know, Understand, and Create!
Bring Every Thought Into Obedience
“Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
(2 Corinthians 10:5)
We can influence the product of a dream through interpretation, prayer, and obedience. But we do not summon true dreams from God; we align ourselves to hear them.
Final Word
Trying to control dreams is a worldly or even occult concept. Instead of control, the goal is alignment. You prepare the spiritual atmosphere, but God writes the message. So can you control your dreams? No, but you can prepare your heart, mind, and spirit to receive, respond, and walk out what God reveals.
